Position Summary:

The Golf Course Superintendent is a hands-on leadership position reporting to the General Manager of the Club. The Superintendent will be responsible for all golf course maintenance and renovations, as well as grounds maintenance and landscaping around the Clubhouse, pool, and tennis courts, including the parking areas. Responsibilities include developing and implementing weekly, monthly, and annual goals and objectives, including but not limited to agronomical programs, budgeting, managing and assisting the crew, record keeping, irrigation, project work, fertilizer & pesticide applications, scouting, water management, and attending committee meetings.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Recruits, interviews, and hires capable individuals.
  • Leads, manages, trains, coaches, motivates, and assists the team in providing exceptional course conditions and aesthetic surroundings.
  • Develops the agronomical plan for the course and leads and assists in the implementation.
  • Oversees and assists in the daily, monthly, and annual care and maintenance of the golf course turf, bunkers, club grounds, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, and wetlands.
  • Develops annual operating budget, monitors performance and expenses, identifies areas of concern and variances, and provides explanations, recommendations, and makes adjustments.
  • Oversees and controls expenses, including payroll, supplies, chemicals, and fertilizers.
  • Oversees the leasing, purchasing, maintenance, and repair of all maintenance equipment.
  • Directs and assists staff with planting new and replacement vegetation, spraying, pruning, and trimming of trees and shrubs, as well as preparing soil plant beds for aesthetically pleasing arrangements and tending to high-stress areas.
  • Directs and assists in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the Club’s grounds in compliance with all regulations.
  • Designs and develops landscaping plans and annual planting, including rotational design to provide a pleasant atmosphere, and directs and assists in implementation and maintenance.
  • Manages an aggressive water usage tracking plan and irrigation system and provides monthly reporting on retaining ponds, wells, and other water source usage.
  • Oversees and assists in construction, renovation, and/or reconstruction projects, whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors.
  • Oversees and assists in the maintenance of other club properties, including the grounds around the clubhouse, tennis courts, swimming pool, other recreational facilities, open spaces, wooded areas, unused acreage, and areas outside the perimeter of the Club.
  • Communicates effectively with General Manager and appropriate department heads (golf, catering, food & beverage, etc.) on course conditions, set-up, play, and other matters regarding the golf play and planning and execution of club events or activities.

  • Provides technical, operational, and safety training to ensure staff are working within the required health and safety regulations.



Experience, Skills, Abilities, Knowledge, and Education:

  • Experience leading, developing, training, overseeing, coaching, and motivating a team.
  • Knowledge and experience in golf course maintenance of greens, fairways, and roughs.
  • Knowledge and experience in landscaping, plants, shrubs, and trees.
  • Understanding of pest control products and their applications.
  • Understanding of turf chemicals and fertilizer products, as well as their applications.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems, drainage installation, repair, and maintenance.
  • Understanding of the game of golf and its impact on agronomic decisions for playability.
  • Have a current state applicator’s license or the ability to acquire a permit.
  • A BS or Associate’s Degree in turf grass management, or related certificate or experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
