Golf Course Superintendent

Sherwood Forest Golf Club is an 18-hole, privately owned, public golf course located in Sanger, CA. We encourage applications from experienced turfgrass managers (Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent) with wide-ranging experience in all phases of golf course maintenance. The ideal candidate will require prior knowledge of turf management in hot summer climate and experience with newly installed greens. An energetic problem solver able to train, lead and retain a dedicated staff to assure exceptional playing conditions for our guests. This position reports directly to the Golf Course Owner.

Educational Requirements

        Minimum of 3-5 years Golf Course supervisory level experience preferred.

        An associates degree from a two-year Horticulture or turf management program.

        Bachelor’s degree in plant science, Agronomy or Horticulture.

        CA Pesticide Applicators License or Certificate or ability to obtain within 6 months

        Experience with managing Operations and Capital budgets.

        Must be well organized and have strong attention to detail.

        Must have strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact with management and staff; Spanish language skills is a plus.

        Prior experience with newly installed greens/sod.

        Extensive knowledge with bent grass greens and Bermuda grass fairways and rough in a hot summer climate.

        Must have thorough understanding of plant/soil/water/environmental relationships and how they affect turfgrass quality.

        Experience with Toro Lynx Central Control, VFD Pumping systems, Toro field controllers, and large valve- in-head sprinklers.

        Ability to properly evaluate, train and lead a diverse staff, following all applicable state/local government regulations; knowledge of proper record keeping of all staff interactions including training and disciplinary action.

        Strong understanding of the game of golf and its playing rules including proper set up and marking for tournaments and special events.

        Basic Computer skills including Excel and Word.

Experience Requirements

·         Supervise and participate in all work associated  with the daily maintenance and improvement of a busy 18-hole Daily Fee golf course including but not limited to:

o    Maintenance of putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and grounds.

o    Maintenance and operation of irrigation pumping, piping, and controls.

o    Supervises all fertilizing, care for turf.

o    Manages all maintenance, construction and improvements on the golf course.  

o    Evaluating, maintaining, and removing of trees/shrubs as needed.

o    Maintenance of two golf course ponds.

o    Implement and maintain safety programs for employees.

·         Manage the annual golf course maintenance expense budget and as such:

o    Purchase supplies and materials within budgetary limitations.

o    Keep accurate records of annual maintenance activities and costs.

o    Prepare reports for Owner/Manager.

o    Implement sound purchasing procedures utilizing preferred vendors.

·         Ensure the proper maintenance and operation of all turf equipment, tractors, and other motorized equipment.

·         Manage the Toro Lynx Central Command Irrigation System, field satellites and sprinkler heads as well as associated piping and wiring.

·         Regularly Meet with Management once a week or more frequently as needed.

·         Ensure that all golf maintenance staff are properly trained and qualified to perform job tasks safely and within city, state, and federal regulations and as such:

o    Address directly all real or perceived environmental concerns.

o    Assure that effective orientation, training, and follow up are given to each new associate upon their hiring and throughout their employment.

o    Develop ongoing training programs to meet needs of golf course and regulations.

·         Ensure proper selection, mixing, calibration, and application of all chemical/fertilizers used on the course and properly record all applications.
