2nd Assistant Superintendent

Idle Hour Country Club, located in Lexington, Kentucky, is seeking a passionate and dedicated Second Assistant Superintendent to join their dynamic agronomy team. The position is ideal for individuals with a strong work ethic and aspirations to advance within the golf industry. The role will play a crucial part in maintaining course conditions to the club’s high standards and supporting daily operations, project execution, and staff development.

Club Highlights:

• 2025 Maintenance Budget: $2,339,000
• Total annual rounds: 16,000
• Total staff: 24 full-time
• Typical work schedule:
  • Summer: 6:00 am – 3:30 pm (later as needed for wilt watch)
  • Shoulder seasons: 6:30 am – 3:30 pm
  • Winter: 7:00 am – 3:30 pm
  • Weekend coverage rotates among Superintendent and Assistants; schedule flexibility and shift trading encouraged
• Turf types:
  • Greens: Bentgrass
  • Tees: Bentgrass
  • Fairways: Bentgrass
  • Rough: Bluegrass/Fescue
• Irrigation system: Toro Lynx
• Equipment: John Deere, leased, less than two years old

Initial Priorities of Position:

• Obtain or demonstrate the ability to obtain a Kentucky Pesticide Applicators License
• Develop operational familiarity with John Deere GPS sprayers
• Gain working knowledge of Toro Lynx irrigation system
• Integrate with the team and build positive working relationships
• Support daily agronomic practices and contribute to exceptional course conditioning

Key Responsibilities, Knowledge, Skills, and Aptitude:

• Assist in planning and supervising daily maintenance operations
• Execute proper mowing, fertilization, aerification, and pest control
• Oversee and troubleshoot irrigation issues
• Train and lead crew in maintenance procedures and equipment use
• Help implement agronomic programs, including chemical applications
• Ensure safety and environmental compliance
• Maintain detailed application and irrigation records
• Collaborate with the Superintendent on projects and long-term planning
• Operate and help maintain equipment as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certificate or Associate degree in Turfgrass Management or related field (preferred, not required)
• Pesticide application knowledge or licensure in Kentucky
• Familiarity with John Deere equipment and Toro Lynx systems
• Experience in golf course maintenance or willingness to learn quickly
• Leadership potential and strong communication skills

Compensation & Benefits:
