Position Description We have an opening for either a Second Assistant or Assistant-in-Training, depending on the individual’s experience level. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, eager to learn, works well in a team setting and is not afraid to make mistakes. Personality and character traits are more important than tactical abilities. We will help you advance in every facet of the golf course industry if you are willing to make the effort to learn and get out of your comfort zone. You should have an overarching goal of someday becoming an Assistant and a Superintendent and should be ambitious and energetic enough to work to earn that. The Course Nine of the 27 holes have just undergone major construction – a project geared towards solving flooding issues that plague many courses in the area. Led by Architect Tyler Rae, nine holes were rerouted after two large retention ponds were expanded and relocated. Because of the repositioning of the ponds, a new routing was necessary, and so we are currently growing in those nine holes. These nine greens were grassed to Pure Distinction and built using the Variable Depth green construction method – a unique and progressive improvement to the Standard USGA Spec which you will become familiar with. The other 18 holes are USGA spec greens built in 2012 and 2014 grassed to A4 bentgrass with Subair. These greens have been plagued by black layer for several years prior to this team’s arrival, and we have implemented an aggressive approach to remediating that issue with DryJecting, Drill and Filling, and core aeration to get the greens to perform like normal USGA greens – with much success. Between finishing a grow-in and opening a new golf course, greens with different grass and building types, black layer, a full country club setting, and a membership who desires a firm and fast course through the green, this is going to be a phenomenal place to learn and grow. We foresee many other projects coming down the pipeline in the future as we continue to try and grow the game of golf and the membership’s enjoyment of the Club. I do not hold anything back from those who seek to learn. On rainy days you can expect be part of short educational meetings where I will share the agronomic calendar, spray schedules, budgets, contracts, proposals and anything else there is a desire to learn about. Holding these things back doesn’t help you, me, or the Club! This position will be available now through May of 2023.

In 1914 a group of enterprising young men combined their vision, 250 acres of farmland and their desire for a first-class golf club in their own backyard which propelled them to establish a beautiful course on 120 of those acres. A fraternity of leading gentlemen of Winnetka sought to establish a place where "games and play and entertainment of all kinds may be practiced and pursued…" As ground was broken for this new club, many Indian relics were discovered and found to emanate from a variety of tribes, from the Miami Indians to the Potawatomi of Michigan. The parcels of farmland purchased are believed to be ancient Indian burial grounds, from which came the permanent club's name: Indian Hill Club. Initial course layout designs from Herbert H. Barker, designer of Chevy Chase and Columbia courses in Maryland, were revised shortly with the hiring of O.C. Simmons, a noted landscape architect. In addition to Barker, two renowned golf architects, H.S. Colt and Donald Ross (acknowledged to be one of the greatest golf architects of all time) were called in to perfect the course and bunker designs.
