Golf Course Superintendent

Under the direction of the Director of Golf, the Superintendent is responsible for directing all activities related to golf course maintenance and preparation for play. This position will be responsible for planning, organizing, scheduling and overseeing golf course maintenance activities and operations; developing long and short-term course improvement plans and completing capital projects; establishing budgets; training, supervising and evaluating the performance of assigned staff.

Job Duties:

  • Responsible for the overall maintenance operations of the assigned Golf Courses by developing and coordinating maintenance activities. Visually inspect and evaluate the golf course grounds/turf for playability and physical condition on a regular basis. Correct any problems or deficiencies.
  • Develops, schedules and implements sound agronomic practices for golf courses, including fertilizer, chemical application, and aerification schedules.
  • Plan, schedule, coordinate and supervise golf course maintenance activities; assure proper maintenance of fairways, tees, roughs, greens and related areas.
  • Meet with golf pro shop staff, club representatives, course maintenance personnel and the public concerning schedules, tournaments, turf conditions and course improvement projects.
  • Program automated irrigation controls in accordance with seasonal weather conditions and turf needs.
  • Oversee all equipment used, analyze operations and recommend appropriate course of action. Assure proper servicing and maintenance in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintain and prepare a variety of records and reports concerning pesticide applications and maintenance schedules and activities.
  • Prepare and monitor budget, manage revenues and expenditures and prepare financial reports. Prepare purchase orders, RFPs, and invoice requests. Prepare short and long-range revenue/expenditure projections, check revenue streams, etc. Formulate comprehensive business plans by researching and analyzing market information (i.e. costs for materials, supplies, labor, major maintenance and capital repairs/equipment).
  • Research sources of supply to obtain the best product and price. Monitor and maintain Golf Course inventory, maintain inventory on computer, resolve discrepancies as required.
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate personnel; develop work schedules and assign work to meet facility needs; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies.
  • Prepare, enforce, maintain and modify policies and procedures manuals; conduct periodic staff meetings to provide and gather information, answer questions and respond to complaints and concerns, both internally and externally.
  • Observe necessary precautions to ensure general public safety; inspect areas for safety and maintenance needs.
  • Provide a variety of general information for the public; respond to questions and resolve complaints as needed.
  • Maintain communications and effective working relationships with District employees, vendors, contractors, community organizations, and the general public.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field.

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass/Landscape Management, Horticulture, or directly related field.

Experience Requirements

  • Five (5) years supervisory experience in golf course maintenance; or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and years of experience in the field.
  • Possession of current Pesticide Application license in the turf and ornamental category.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment. Must be insurable by the District carrier at the onset and for the duration of employment.
  • Current certifications in AED/CPR and First Aid or the ability to obtain such certifications within sixty (60) days of employment.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of the methods, materials, specialized tools, and equipment involved in the development and maintenance for golf course/turf management. Requires knowledge of the chemical and cultural controls for disease, including certification for and the proper usage of agrochemicals, fertilizers, and other soil additives. Requires knowledge of the operation of irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and general office equipment (computer, copier, fax, phone, etc.). Proficiency with applicable computer software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
