The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for managing and maintaining the golf course and surrounding grounds to ensure optimal playing conditions. Here’s a breakdown of the typical position requirements for this role working under a Director of Agronomy
Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree in:
- Turfgrass Management
- Agronomy
- Horticulture
- Soil Science
- Related fields
Note: Extensive experience may sometimes substitute for formal education.
Experience Requirements
- 3-7 years of progressive experience in golf course maintenance.
- Experience in a supervisory or leadership role is often required.
- Prior work at a private club, championship course, or under a certified superintendent is often preferred.
Technical Skills
- Turfgrass maintenance and pest/disease identification
- Irrigation system management (Rain Bird)
- Chemical and fertilizer application (with state pesticide license)
- Budgeting and cost control
- Equipment maintenance knowledge
- Golf course renovation and construction experience (a plus)
Leadership & Management Skills
- Strong team management and motivation skills
- Ability to train and supervise grounds crew
- Schedule and task planning
- Conflict resolution and interpersonal communication
Work Conditions
- Ability to work early mornings, weekends, holidays, and in all weather conditions
- Physically fit to handle outdoor work and operate machinery
Certifications (Often Preferred or Required)
- GCSAA member Class A or B
- Florida State pesticide applicator’s license
- CPR/First Aid certification (occasionally required)
