About Greenbrier Golf & Country Club
Founded in 1971 by William Morris Hart Sr. and Watts & Call, Inc., Greenbrier Golf & Country Club, located in Lexington, Kentucky, was established with the goal of creating an upscale, uncrowded, family-oriented club that upholds the traditions and excellence of private golf and country club living. Today, the club is owned and operated by Mr. Hart's sons, William M. Hart Jr. and Larry Hart. The club has a long history of making capital improvements, including renovations to its pool, golf course irrigation system, and a clubhouse renovation. In 2023, the club constructed a 16,000 square foot, $5.5 million Lifestyle Center. Our course and recently renovated practice facility are focal points for our members and are consistently maintained to the highest standards, which is key to member satisfaction. We are an active club, hosting approximately 22,000 rounds of golf annually, many of which are competitive league and tournament play, and we take great pride in our reputation for excellent course conditions.
Job Description
Greenbrier Golf & Country Club is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Golf Course Superintendent to lead our agronomy team. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader with a passion for turfgrass management and a proven track record of maintaining a high-quality golf course. This position requires a professional who is not only a team player but also an independent self-starter capable of taking ownership of the course's operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Course Management: Oversee all aspects of golf course maintenance, including but not limited to, mowing, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, and course renovations.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, train, and manage a dedicated crew of groundskeepers. Foster a positive and productive work environment.
- Budget Management: Develop and manage an annual departmental budget of $1.25M - $1.5M, ensuring fiscal responsibility and efficient use of resources.
- Agronomic Expertise: Plan and execute a comprehensive agronomic program. Expertise in managing both cool and warm season grasses is an absolute requirement due to our location in the transition zone.
- Equipment Management: Oversee the maintenance and repair of all course equipment, ensuring operational readiness and longevity.
- Communication: Maintain open and effective communication with the General Manager/Ownership, Management Team, and the membership. Provide regular updates on course conditions and upcoming projects.
- Safety: Uphold and enforce all club safety policies and procedures and follow all state and federal regulations.
Course-Specifics:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the health and playability of the following turfgrass varieties:
- Greens: Bentgrass/Poa Mix from Original construction in 1971
- Tees: Bentgrass
- Fairways: Meijer Zoysia, chosen for resilience in the transition zone climate.
- Rough: A mix of Kentucky Bluegrass and Fescue.
Educational Requirements
- A degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Golf Course Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.
- Demonstrated experience in managing a golf course in the transition zone is essential.
- Strong knowledge of irrigation systems, pesticide application, and a comprehensive understanding of turfgrass diseases and pests.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to manage a budget and control costs effectively.
- A pesticide applicator's license is required.
