Golf Course Superintendent
Scope of Responsibilities
Within the spirit of “Making People’s Dreams Come True”, this position is responsible for oversight of the golf course operation and maintenance. The responsibilities include turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, personnel management, budget/forecasting, financial management, homeowner relations, scheduling/maintenance of irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recording, and compliance of regulatory issues. In addition, the Golf Course Superintendent oversees staff and applicable department operations and services. These duties are accomplished while delivering Raving Fans customer service to both internal and external customers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities for this position include the following;
• Responsible for all phases of Golf course maintenance and operations, profit and loss of business unit, construction, maintenance, and personnel for specified golf course.
• Work closely with, advise and coordinate with Regional Golf Course Superintendent.
• Work closely with, advise and coordinate with the Golf Professional for specified golf course on any issues related to golf course maintenance.
• Oversee the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, and wetlands.
• Manage an aggressive water usage tracking plan and irrigation systems and provide monthly reporting on retaining ponds, wells, and other water source usage.
• Ability and knowledge to lay out irrigation patterns, drainage patterns, construct tees and/or greens.
• Ability to use arithmetic to measure, compute number of materials to use, and to inspect product and be sure it confirms to requirements.
• Schedule maintenance practices around play and outings to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to golfers.
• Direct and participate in the repair and maintenance of the golf course.
• Supervise and control all maintenance expenses associated with golf course operations, including payroll, supplies, chemicals, and fertilizers.
• Supervise and participate in the application and recording of chemical applications
(fertilizers and pesticides) on the golf course in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
• Provides technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff are working within OSHA, club safety, state, and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
• All other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Customarily and regularly directs the work of two or more full-time employees or the equivalent and has the authority to make decisions regarding the hiring, firing, and promotion of these direct reports.
Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
• Constantly required to lift and/or move up to seventy-five (75) pounds.
• Constantly required to work with chemicals.
• Both: Inside and Outside. A job is considered “both” if the activities occur inside or outside in approximately equal amounts. Wet and Humid: Contact with water or other liquids. Humid: Atmospheric conditions with moisture content sufficiently high to cause marked bodily discomfort. Exposure to: Odors, toxic conditions, dust, or poor ventilation.
• Personal protective equipment must always be worn if the job requires such equipment.
Educational Requirements
Minimum Requirements
• Two (2) year degree or certificate in Turf Management (or related field, like agronomy, horticulture, plant science, soil science).
• Two (2) years of experience as a Golf Course Superintendent or Golf Course Assistant Superintendent or observed performance demonstrating the skills and abilities to excel in the position.
• Advanced computer skills required for financial reporting and control of operations.
• Pesticide Application License required.
• Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Associate of America preferred.
• This position is subjected to The Villages Vehicle Safety Program and its policies as it requires the use of personal vehicles for company business. Please refer to the Vehicle Safety Program for the policies and procedures that this position is required to follow.
• A Valid Driver’s License with a record acceptable to company standards is required for this position.
