Golf Course Superintendent

The Golf Course Superintendent at Pine Grove Country Club (PGCC) is responsible for the overall maintenance and management of the golf course's turf and landscaping, ensuring optimal playing conditions and aesthetics.  This role requires a combination of technical expertise, including knowledge of plant science, pest management, and irrigation, as well as strong leadership and management skills to oversee a team and manage budgets.  Key responsibilities include the following:  Supervising and executing all aspects of turf-grass maintenance, including mowing, fertilization, pest and disease control and irrigation.  Maintaining the overall health and appearance of the golf course's landscaping, including trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds.  Hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating a team of ground crew members.  Developing and managing the annual maintenance budget for the golf course.  Overseeing the maintenance and repair of all golf course maintenance equipment. Planning and implementing improvements to the golf course, such as bunker renovations or drainage projects.  Implementing and managing an integrated pest management program to minimize the use of pesticides and herbicides.  Managing the irrigation system and ensuring efficient water usage.  Ensuring compliance with all relevant environmental regulations and safety standards.  Effectively communicating with the golf course Board of Directors, general manager, and other stakeholders regarding course conditions and maintenance plans.

Educational Requirements

A bachelor's degree in agronomy, horticulture, or a related field is preferred.

Experience Requirements

Several years of experience in golf course maintenance and management is required.

Special Requirements

Certification from the GCSAA (Golf Course Superintendents Association of America) is preferred.  Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential.  Need to be able to prioritize tasks and delegate responsibility to subordinate staff.  Need to develop and manage relationships with vendors and suppliers.  Need the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.  PGCC is located in thee Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Superintendents in Northern Michigan must be prepared to deal with a short growing season,, harsh winters, and specific challenges related to snow mold and other cold-weather diseases.  Managing a seasonal workforce is a common challenge at PGCC, requiring effective recruitment and training strategies.
