Golf Course Superintendent

Full-time

The Superintendent will be responsible for the day-to-day management and maintenance of the golf facility at a given community.  The scope of these responsibilities will include but not be limited to: staff management, working within a budget, equipment maintenance, and turf and Irrigation systems. The Superintendent will provide a world-class golf course for the members and prospective property owners working with the Club General Manager and Head Golf Professional in each development that is in keeping with the highest standards of excellence established by The Cliffs Communities.

 

JOB DUTIES:

  • Interact with Members and guests, responding to complaints/concerns, answering questions, and attending golf advisor committee meetings.
  • Select and hire golf maintenance staff to meet the current needs of the department.
  • Supervise staff in determining the need for irrigation, seeding and fertilization rates, sod cutting, cutting turf grass on fairways, tees, greens, and roughs, raking sand traps.
  • Ensure staff provides for the proper care and cultivation of shrubs, trees, and flowers, pruning, trimming, and spraying.  Supervise application of pesticides, fertilizers, fungicides, and insecticides to treat the course.
  • Inspection of turf grass for disease, pest and or mechanical damage daily.
  • Oversee repairs of broken lines or valves for water systems and may perform necessary repairs in times of emergency.  Also assist in the planning and development of new irrigation systems, including redesigns and modifications of existing irrigation systems.
  • Ensure all golf maintenance staff members are trained in the proper operation, care, and maintenance of equipment.  Supervise maintenance and repair on assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Address staff issues in a proper manner.
  • May, on occasion, perform necessary general grounds maintenance work when understaffed.
  • Maintain detailed records of personnel, equipment used, supplies, and schedules indicating application of fertilizers, sprays, etc., and their use for each season.
  • Keep daily records of course activities such as fertilizing, cutting cups, spraying, etc. and assist in preparing reports reflecting total hours of personnel and equipment used.
  • Prepare annual budget reflecting necessary and requested expenditures.
  • Process all invoices to be paid in a timely manner.
  • Identify problems and make recommendations for course maintenance to management.

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Turf Management or Agronomy or a related field and/or a combination of experience.
  • Class “A” Certification preferred.
  • Must achieve Certified Pesticide Applicators License within 6 months of hire

Experience Requirements

  • 3-5+ yrs turf management experience in a supervisory or lead capacity, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Management of Champion or similar ultra-dwarf turf grass in the transition zone required.
  • Class “A” Certification preferred.
  • Must achieve Certified Pesticide Applicators License within 6 months of hire.
  • Considerable knowledge in methods, equipment, and materials used in maintaining a golf course; good knowledge of general repair and maintenance procedures; good knowledge of practices and principles of effective supervision; considerable knowledge of mixing and administering chemicals used in treating turf; considerable knowledge of automatic irrigation systems.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Sound financial and budget, leadership/management, organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Knowledge of the game of golf and its rules.
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities, supervise, and train employees.
  • Must be able to identify pest threats on the golf course.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Special Requirements

  • Class “A” Certification preferred.
  • Must achieve Certified Pesticide Applicators License within 6 months of hire.
