Golf Course Superintendent
Founded in 1926, Brook-Lea Country Club is a private, member-owned club located on 180 acres
in Rochester, NY. The 18-hole championship golf course was designed by legendary architect
Donald Ross, and features Bentgrass/Poa annua greens and fairways. Known as the jewel of
Rochester’s west side, Brook-Lea also offers an Olympic-sized pool and spa, full-service
clubhouse, and a welcoming community with a proud history and strong commitment to
continuous improvement.
Position Overview:
Brook-Lea Country Club is seeking an experienced Golf Course Superintendent to lead all aspects of golf course maintenance and agronomy. The position reports to the General Manager/COO and collaborates with the Greens & Grounds Committee. Additionally, interfaces with the Head Golf Professional and Director of Golf to ultimately develop and execute plans for course improvements, environmental sustainability, and exceptional playing conditions. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a proactive management style, exceptional attention to detail, and an agile approach to tasks with the ability to adapt on the spot. The Superintendent will ensure the course is consistently presented at the highest possible standards while protecting and enhancing the long-term health of the property’s natural and maintained areas.
Key Responsibilities:
• Direct, coordinate, and supervise all golf course maintenance and agronomy practices.
• Maintain and improve Bentgrass/Poa annua greens and fairways on the historic Donald Ross–designed course.
• Operate, maintain, and manage the Rain Bird irrigation system, with anticipated Rain Bird Central Communication upgrade in 2026.
• Execute all turf management, fertilization, and pest control programs.
• Recruit, train, and manage golf course maintenance staff.
• Oversee and maintain a modern equipment fleet, including:
o (2) Ventrec Rough Mowers (2022)
o (3) Toro Tri-Flex Greens Mowers (2024)
o (3) Toro Reelmaster Fairway Mowers (2024)
o (1) LS 75HP Tractor (2025)
o Anticipated Greens Roller (2026)
• Develop and manage annual agronomy budgets in alignment with club goals. • Maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements related to chemical use, water management, and worker safety.
Educational Requirements
• Degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field required.
• Minimum 5 years of experience as a Golf Course Superintendent (or First Assistant Superintendent) at a private club.
• GCSAA Class A Certification required.
• Valid New York State Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain within 90 days.
Experience Requirements
• Knowledge of cool season turfgrass management, particularly Bentgrass and Poa annua.
• Demonstrated proactive leadership style with strong attention to detail.
• Takes an agile approach to tasks, adapting quickly to changing conditions and priorities.
• Proven success in managing golf course maintenance teams.
• Familiar with industry best practices, modern equipment, and irrigation technologies.
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach with staff, members, and leadership.
