The Country Club of Birmingham, founded in 1898, has golf as its emphasis. While golf is still a major part of the Club, it has grown in membership and includes aquatics, fitness, family, and racquet sports, and offers unparalleled dining and recreational experiences for all.

The Club offers two 18-hole golf courses, the West Course and the East Course. The West Course, originally designed by Donald Ross and later by other Hall of Fame architects, provide a challenging course that has hosted many tournaments. The East Course, also designed by Donald Ross has remained true to its original design and provides a challenging course for all.

The courses are supported by one maintenance facility, with a climate-controlled (heating and air conditioning) equipment maintenance shop. The equipment is a mix of both John Deere and Toro and has both Foley and Bernhard Grinders.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Equipment Manager will assist the Equipment Manager in leading and assisting the team, and be responsible for equipment maintenance and repair, parts and inventory, and maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment. The Assistant Equipment Manager will be a hands-on guide, training, coaching, and assisting the Equipment Mechanic and team in the repair and maintenance of turf equipment and vehicle fleets, parts fabrication, and parts and equipment inventory. The Equipment Manager will be motivated, enthusiastic, and united with the maintenance team to produce championship golf course conditions.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assisting in leading, managing, guiding, training, and coaching the team in maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing turf equipment, inventory management, and other shop responsibilities.
  • Maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing all equipment in the fleet, including parts fabrication.
  • Managing and assisting in the preventive maintenance program of equipment.
  • Maintaining a stocked and orderly parts inventory, including having positive working relationships with suppliers and vendors.
  • Performing fabrication, including any cutting, folding, casting, forging, machining, shearing, punching, stamping, or welding.
  • Promoting and ensuring all health, safety, and environmental regulations are known, understood, and practiced, including proper disposal of waste oils, tires, etc.
  • Assisting in setting and adjusting daily, weekly, and monthly repair and maintenance schedules based on equipment requirements and the course maintenance schedule.
  • Utilizing the Club’s work order system, Tasktracker, and maintaining a complete set of accurate records for equipment, liquids, parts, equipment conditions, repairs, costs of repairs, and preventive maintenance,
  • Maintaining and ensuring an organized, clean, and safe shop.
  • Effectively communicating and assisting golf course management and staff.
  • Performing daily course checks to ensure cut quality and proper operation of equipment.
  • Assist with the equipment budget, monitoring cost and expenditures, and identifying variances and recommending and implementing corrective action as necessary.
  • Assist in the evaluation, selection, and purchasing/leasing of new turf and/or landscape equipment.
  • Assisting or performing other tasks as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate on a professional level with staff, vendors, suppliers, members, and guests.
  • Knowledge of turf equipment, including cutting unit set-up, hydraulics, electrical theory, diagnostics, combustion engines, and welding.
  • Ability to fabricate parts, including cutting, folding, casting, forging, machining, shearing, punching, stamping, or welding.
  • Ability to read and follow manuals, understand preventive maintenance requirements and schedules, and repair equipment.
  • Know and have the ability to utilize various trade tools and the safety guidelines of their use.
  • Have an understanding of the game of golf and the effects turf equipment has on course playability.
  • Working knowledge of work order systems and Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Trade school, formal education, or certifications in mechanical, electrical, or related programs, or equivalent experience.
