Assistant Equipment Technician

Karsten in Stillwater, Oklahoma is seeking a motivated Equipment Technician I  or II to support the maintenance and performance of our fleet of turf equipment. In this role, you’ll assist with routine maintenance, basic repairs, and equipment diagnostics while gaining hands-on experience with a wide range of engines, mowers, and specialty golf course machinery. This position involves hands-on mechanical work in both shop and outdoor environments. The role requires frequent walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and working in confined spaces. The technician may be required to lift or move objects up to 100 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation. Work may occur in variable weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold.

Visual acuity (close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception) is necessary for safely performing the essential functions of this job.

 

 Requirements

  1. Ability to read and interpret operation, maintenance, and safety manuals.
  2. Ability to work safely in outdoor environments subject to changing weather conditions.
  3. Minimum education: High School Diploma or equivalent (some college or technical coursework preferred).
  4. Ability to read and understand wiring, hydraulic, and schematic diagrams.
  5. Knowledge of internal combustion engine theory, operation, and maintenance.
  6. Understanding of mower grinding, sharpening, and adjustment techniques.
  7. Commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.
  8. Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  9. Proven reliability and punctual attendance.
  10. Positive attitude and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
 

Essential Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.

  1. Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues on turf equipment.
  2. Perform preventative maintenance, lubrication, sharpening, and adjustments according to schedule.
  3. Maintain accurate and detailed repair and service records daily.
  4. Adjust cutting units and perform precise setup for optimal after-cut performance.
  5. Adhere to all approved safety and environmental procedures.
  6. Perform or learn basic welding techniques.
  7. Operate and maintain computer-based service tracking systems.
  8. Fabricate small parts or tools as needed.
  9. Use diagnostic tools to test and repair hydraulic and electrical systems.
  10. Work extended hours (45-55 per week during peak season; 40 hours off-season) as required.
  11. Be available for holidays and special tournament support as directed by the Equipment/Shop Manager.
 

 

Additional Duties

  1. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop, tools, and work areas.
  2. Communicate clearly and courteously with managers, staff, and vendors.
  3. Provide assistance to Golf Course Superintendents, Assistant Managers, and the Equipment/Shop Manager regarding equipment use and best practices.
  4. Perform snow removal (plowing and hand-shoveling) and other assigned duties as needed.

Educational Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required

Continuing education in golf equipment maintenance preferred 

Experience Requirements

Equipment Technician I:

  • Pay Range: $16.00 – $19.00 per hour, depending on experience, education, and certifications.
  • Technician I is typically an entry-level role with a focus on learning proper maintenance procedures, safety practices, and fundamental mechanical repairs.

Equipment Technician II:

  • Pay Range: $19.00 – $22  per hour, depending on experience, education, and certifications.
  • Technician II demonstrates greater independence, advanced diagnostic skills, and the ability to perform complex repairs and adjustments.
