Golf Course Superintendent

Full-time

Philadelphia Cricket Club, one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in the country, is seeking a Golf Course Superintendent for its Militia Hill Golf Course.   

Most recently, our Militia Hill Superintendent accepted a superintendent position in New Jersey, making him the 15th PCC member of their Turf team to earn Superintendent roles throughout the country. 

The position is designed for either career acceleration towards a Golf Course Superintendent role of their own, or for an individual who values career stability in the Philadelphia region at a nationally recognized facility. 

The Golf Course Superintendent reports directly to the CPO/Director of Grounds, Dan Meersman, and the Grounds Maintenance Manager, Robb Moulds.

Overview of Philadelphia Cricket Club Golf Course Operations:

  • Staff: In season 70 employees across 3 golf courses. Full-time year-round employees are 36 employees.
  • Maintenance budget: $7 million maintenance budget and $1.75 million capital
  • Typical work schedule: April - August are about 60 hours. March, September, October are about 50 hours. November - February are about 42 hours.
  • Equipment: part of a John Deere Lease package.
  • Irrigation system is Rain Bird Cirrus Pro. 2 courses have Rain Bird ICM 700 series heads. 1 course has Toro 800 series heads that run off Rain Bird Satellites.
  • Future projects: Wrapping up construction work on a new Driving Range and Short Game Complex.  We will be starting restoration work on the Flourtown Clubhouse and construction of a brand-new Golf Performance Center in 2026.

INITIAL PRIORITIES OF POSITION:

  • Learn the culture, operations and daily practices to ensure optimal golf course conditions and member experiences.
  • Assists with various St. Martin’s campus activities include racquet sports and member event programs. 
  • Participates in St. Martin’s campus parking lot and beautification project.
  • Develops rapport with the golf course maintenance team, various constituents including golf operations and clubhouse team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND APTITUDE:

Agronomics/Daily Golf Course Management: 

  • Strong technical and analytical focus to ensure optimal agronomic, water, soil, pest, and environmental management programs.
  • Priority management - understands where/how/why to focus course maintenance practices to provide optimal conditions and member experiences.
  • Consistently seeks out modern conditioning methodology including tools and practices.
  • Experience with “high priority” bunker maintenance
  • Attentive to results-oriented cultural, fertility, and pesticide programming.
  • Understands regulatory, construction, surface, and stormwater planning.
  • Creates a safe, productive, and enjoyable environment for employees exhibiting good “housekeeping” practices. 
  • Utilizes sound environmental practices.
  • Solid irrigation and drainage practices - promotes firmer daily conditions.

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Train, motivate and supervise the work of the employees in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Maintain a sound Human Resource and Safety Program.
  • Supervise the staff conducting servicing and repair of turfgrass maintenance and construction equipment.

Communication:

  • Strong follow-up reporting with the CPO/Director of Grounds, Militia Hill Pro Shop, and direct reports.
  • Works in collaboration with PCC employees to ensure optimal member experiences.
  • Builds team rapport through high standards of team growth, and empowers them to take ownership within the golf course operations.

Business/Financial Management: 

  • Collaborate with the leadership team on the preparation of an annual Golf Course Management Budget pertaining to course management, financial control and Capital Expenditures.
  • Experience executing standard operating procedures and training programs to onboard new staff.
  • Exemplary administrative, inventory, record-keeping, and accounting practices.
  • Comfortable utilizing Microsoft Office or similar software.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, federal, and state regulations.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Experience developing capital equipment replacement plans
  • Zero-based budgeting skills.
  • Maintain an Inventory Control System and provide monthly end reports to the CFO.
  • Ensure that all chemical and fertilizer application records are accurate and up to date in accordance with State law.

Golf IQ/Industry Relations:

  • High golf IQ - steward of the game, environment, and traditions.
  • Developing and implementing comprehensive maintenance standards and best practices ensure consistent quality across the golf course for ultimate golfer experience. 
  • Golfer/student of the game with a sound understanding of ideal playing conditions.
  • Contributes to PCC's overall environmental and community stewardship programs including First Green programs.
  • Understand golf rules and regulations and playing conditions.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • $85,000-$100,000 depending on experience
