Golf Course Superintendent

Portland West is a public course located right outside of the greater Hartford area, in Portland, Connecticut. The golf course is an executive 18-hole, par 60 course. With multiple tee boxes on every hole, the course can offer a tough, but fair experience for golfers of all skill levels. The spacious clubhouse is a great space for hosting multiple events and social gatherings.
Primary Responsibilities
- Daily maintenance and long-term care of greens, tees, fairways, rough, and practice areas
- Hiring, training, and scheduling of grounds and seasonal staff
- Adequate knowledge of irrigation systems and system upkeep
- Mowing, fertilization, aeration, and pest-control programs
- Monitoring turf health and responding to weather or environmental conditions
- Oversight of maintenance equipment, tools, and facilities
- Budget preparation and coordination with ownership
- Course setup for tournaments, leagues, and special events
- Compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards
- Regular communication with owners and PGA
- Basic Mechanic Knowledge for small engine repairs
- Maintain basic landscaping around the clubhouse and parking lot
- Experience with operating heavy equipment; backhoe loader, etc.
Experience Requirements
- Experience in golf course maintenance, turf management, or related field preferred
- Working knowledge of turfgrass, irrigation systems, and equipment operation
- Has or working to obtain supervisor pesticide license
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently
- Physical ability to perform outdoor work in varying weather conditions
- Connecticut state pesticide license (or ability to obtain) preferred
