Golf Course Superintendent

Full-time

The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the overall management, maintenance, and agronomic performance of the golf course and surrounding grounds. This includes leadership of the maintenance team, budget oversight, long-range planning, environmental stewardship, and collaboration with Club leadership to deliver exceptional course conditions year-round.

The successful candidate will combine technical expertise with strong communication skills and a passion for team development.

Key Responsibilities

Agronomy & Course Conditioning

  • Develop and execute comprehensive agronomic programs, including fertilization, integrated pest management, irrigation scheduling, and cultural practices
  • Maintain exceptional playing conditions for greens, tees, fairways, and roughs
  • Implement IPM and environmental best practices
  • Oversee irrigation system performance and water management strategy
  • Lead short- and long-term agronomic planning
  • Ensure full compliance with environmental regulations, safety standards, and pesticide application requirements

 Leadership & Culture

  • Recruit, train, mentor, and retain a high-performing maintenance team
  • Foster a positive, accountable, and safety-focused culture
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with ownership, golf operations, and department heads to align course conditions with tournaments, events, and daily play expectations
  • Participate in planning meetings and provide regular course updates

 Financial & Operational Management

  • Prepare and manage annual operating and capital budgets
  • Monitor expenses, payroll, and purchasing
  • Manage equipment fleet maintenance and replacement planning
  • Oversee vendor relationships and contract services

 Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, or a related field (preferred)
  • Associate’s degree from an intensive two-year turf grass management program

 Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a leadership role (Superintendent or Senior Assistant ready to advance)
  • Proven success managing warm-season turf in coastal climates
  • Strong experience with irrigation systems, including diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, and water management strategies
  • Experience preparing and managing operating and capital budgets
  • Alabama pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain)
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills

 Special Requirements

 Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
  • Able to meet and perform physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment which is typical of this position
  • Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, and pulling
  • Willingness and flexibility to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required in a year-round golf operation
