Golf Course Superintendent

Full-time

Miramont Country Club is seeking an experienced Golf Course Superintendent to manage all golf course maintenance operations and lead cultural practices, project work, and team development. This leader will uphold the highest playing conditions for our members and guests while maintaining the strong operational standards set by the Director of Agronomy. The Superintendent will be responsible for payroll, personnel, operations, and all application records, while maintaining effective employee and Club member relations.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Directs maintenance activities for all golf course components.
  • Manages the planting, fertilizing, plant protectant applications, seeding, sodding and maintenance of all turf and ornamental areas on the golf course.
  • Briefs Assistant Superintendents on the daily work and upcoming tasks and projects.
  • Supervises the assistant superintendent and mid-level managers.
  • Audits the completion of work assignments by crewmembers and assists with field decisions regarding job procedures, work standards, and machinery use.
  • Interviews and hires new team members within lines of the department-approved staffing matrix.
  • Trains mid-level managers in the safe and proper operation of all golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Performs time-keeping payroll approvals for staff.
  • Audits safe working conditions with all job assignments and is responsible for instructing staff on proper equipment use and work methods.
  • Oversees the whole department to ensure a high level of standards and quality regarding golf course conditions.
  • Administers the budget and maintains the costs within the department guidelines.
  • Responsible for financial management and assisting the Director of Agronomy with the annual Capital budget.
  • Enforces and follow the fair progressive discipline and counseling procedures.
  • Keeps record of all disciplinary incidences and passes them along to the HR Manager including termination requests.
  • Provides excellent member services, professional advice and assistance to all patrons.
  • Audits the pruning work of all plants and trees throughout the golf course and surrounding areas.
  • Proactively takes measures to cure and prevent any landscape diseases, insect damage, weed infestation, etc. by routinely applying fungicides, herbicides and insecticides.
  • Manages the calibration of all fertilizing & plant protection application equipment and/or products.
  • Audits the irrigation system routinely including but not limited to tracking of control wires and identifying non-functioning or malfunctioning sprinklers and system components.
  • Trains the assistant superintendent and mid-level managers on irrigation control system, schedule and field satellites based on plant/turf needs.
  • Assigns any milliamp electrical “leaks” or losses that prevent areas or entire system from operating.
  • Audits the repair of breaks in field wiring to ensure continued operation of the system.
  • Inspects and operates all aspects of the irrigation pump house.
  • Supervises installation, programming, repair and maintenance of irrigation and pumping systems.
  • Trains the assistant superintendent and mid-level managers on the irrigation controls and arranges for repair as/when necessary. 
  • Audits any supplemental sprinkler operation to any deficient areas.
  • Audits the weed control in all areas within the boundaries of the golf course, including but not limited to identifying weed species and the chemicals necessary for control and application of products thereto.
  • Audits any traffic control ropes as well as boundary and hazard stakes are in the proper location and in a clean and organized fashion.
  • Audits the golf course and bunker maintenance work.
  • Inspects all ornamental/mulch beds.
  • Trains the assistant superintendent and application specialist on fertilizer application with a hand-held, waking, or pull-behind fertilizer spreader.
  • Inspects the chemical applications to turf, ornamental shrubbery/hedges, and trees.
  • Keeps records of all annual safety programs, maintenance activities, pesticide and fertilizer applications.
  • Manages the operations of string trimmers in trimming around trees, fence lines, lake banks, bunker edges and hillsides.
  • Assigns tasks to provide a clean environment for members and guests.
  • Assigns tasks to complete project work including but not limited to grades and prepares soil bases, lays sod and sprigs; plants landscape areas and annual color as needed.
  • Leads by example to build upon our vision and mission while upholding the company's values.
  • Be informed on, and promotes all Club activities and services.
  • Supports Miramont’s Vision and Missions Statement.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Director of Agronomy.

Educational Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Four year Degree in Agronomy, Horticulture or Golf Course Management and/or verifiable landscape maintenance experience.

Experience Requirements

  • Three to four years of golf operations management experience preferred.
  • Warm season turf grass management preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with golf course construction and/or renovation projects preferred.
  • Prior experience in high-end golf/country club or hospitality industry preferred.
  • Strong communication and correspondence skills with the ability to maintain sound working relationships and communications with members, management, staff, ownership, prospective buyers and vendors
  • Familiarity with the characteristics, growth habits and cultivation of a wide selection of annuals, flowering bulbs, and perennial plant materials, incl. herbaceous and woody ornamental plants.
  • Knowledge of tools, methods and materials used in grounds maintenance work.
  • Ability to operate all landscape maintenance equipment.
  • Must be able to handle stress in a healthy and professional manner.
  • Must be able to complete tasks in an accurate and timely manner. 
  • Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and equipment.
  • Has the ability to learn new technologies/equipment as necessary.
  • Knowledge of golf course operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform required role in emergency situations.

Special Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • TDA (Texas Department of Agriculture) Pesticide Applicators License.
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Able to meet and perform the physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment which is typical of this position.
  • Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping and pulling.
  • May need to use some protective equipment, such as a respirator, gloves, earplugs, eye guards/visors, boots and hat.
