For much of the country, winter got off to a very mild start. But that was abruptly interrupted by extreme cold, copious amounts of snow and crippling ice storms that affected about half the country.
After the groundhog said six more weeks of winter, unseasonably mild conditions have since dominated midwinter conditions.
