Waiting on Rain

Mowing

After a beautiful week last week this one has rain on the forecast. Luckily today had no rain! Recently I have been mowing greens, tees, and rough to get to know the course better. I enjoy mowing and it had been a bit different mowing greens with an 18" reel. The ones I'm used to are 21" and the tee mowers here are also 21". It takes a bit of thinking to remember that the greens mowers are 3" shorter so the sight line is different. I mowed two different greens routes this weekend and have enjoyed getting on the greens to see them up close.

Fertilizer Program

Course Superintendent Aidan O'Hara said that the rain on Sunday really helped the greens as they are stressed. The greens were mowed all the days I since I have started to remove Poa annua seed heads, even though not much grass has been taken off. The greens needed a break and they got it today when no mowers went out on them and they were fertilized with a 23-0-23 fertilizer, along with some iron application. In addition a light addition of topdressing went down. Aidan said that the greens are fertilized on a 2-3 week schedule depending on the weather and by seasons end the final ration of nutrients will be 5-1-5. Hopefully with some rain and the added nutrients the greens will begin growing faster and green up. I look forward to seeing the results.
