Bator's superintendent career included stops at Pine Valley, Merion and Oakmont. Over those years he mentored -- some may say 'tormented' -- many assistants who went on to careers as head superintendents.

He shares with us some of what made him tick, and advice for today. Some takeaways:

  • I hired good people, but pushed them and taught them survival tactics
  • Know the importance of detail work
  • Learn to delegate
  • Work in the trenches; I always did
  • Know where youre weak; hire people to fill those gaps
  • Dont mess up your personal life like I did. Too many divorces (3). Personal and family life is more important than the job. Biggest disappointment of my life.
  • Always seek out help; never stop learning
  • Today, I learn from every superintendent that I do consulting work for; and many are former assistants.

Great interview and great advice from a living legend. You can learn a lot from Dick, and the mistakes he openly says he made.

A lot of good info Dick Bator. Haven seen or heard from you in years. Hoping to maybe meet up with you in San Antonio at the GCSAA conference. Keep up the good work.

In 2016, Seth Joines made the same mistake. Bator never worked at Oakmont, but he did work at OAK HILL in Rochester, NY.  Here is the Seth Jones article, "Some quiet time (really) with Richard Bator."  June 16, 2016.

You possibly may have borowed the info from here, so it's not your fault if you did, because Seth Jones is a trusted source. Editors are not known to be sloppy., they're paid to proofread text...

I know it's not the end of the world, but if you know Dick Battor, you know he took his lumps. He deserves better. I'm sure mistakes like these are not made with other superintendents who have bounced around, noit out of incompetence, but for opposite. In Bator's case, he really could grow grass.

Thanks,

Brian Rizzo

It's possible your article carried an error from Seth Jones article with Bator. Dick worked at Oak Hill, not Oakmont. Seth's article came out before this one. If you did use Seth;s piece as a source, it's notyou fault because editors are paid to proofread text; they are not known to be sloppy. Below is the article from Golfdom. I never reached out to Golfdom.

Bator is a legend and deserves respect. To make a glaring error like this isn't right.

I know it's a million years later and it's not even worth mentioning it, but when I saw it again, I had to say something. If someone writes something there are now at least two credible sources that are perpetuating a mistake.

Thanks,

Brian
