Our Balls Aren't Fun Anymore

In the final attempt to 'Fix Golf' before we grow it, the most important message to ever emerge from Rockbottum CC is presented in the following Commentary . . . Rant . . . Wild-Eyed Tirade.

Unlike most offerings from Rockbottum, this message is not a subliminal point wrapped in diversionary goofiness, this is serious material.

Although the script for 'Our Balls' has been ready for months, we waited until after The PGA Championship to release it.  The reason:  While the tournament was an amazing example of the skill, science and dedication involved in producing the playing field for a major championship, the severity of the set-up will have a negative effect on golf.

Skinny fairways, deep rough and blazing fast greens will trickle down to normal golf at even a faster rate.

It's because of the ball.  The damage has been done by the ball-makers and the regulatory powers and while the golf course superintendent has had no hand in the evolution of the modern ball, as the most important component of golf, the modern GCS should certainly be aware of all the factors in this complex dilemma.

The set-up for the modern major tournament is a counter-measure aimed at the modern ball, and the heart of the problem is not the reason you suspect.
