Irish Open: Day 5

The tournament is shaping up nicely. After 2 rounds of golf everyone keeps talking about how nice the course and weather is. I have to agree. Great weather brings in more people thus the spectacular job the maintenance staff does is seen by many more people and looks amazing on the television. Morning jobs have been the same for the 40 staff and volunteers for the past 3 days. Each day the work gets done faster. We must be more efficient and our tasks. For Pat and I, we mowed our greens about 15 minutes faster today even though the real roller on my mower broke down for 10 minutes. 6a153b4182cbd864721681885a62f11f-.jpg

A quick synopsis of the work being done for the Irish Open. With 40 workers a lot of work is done; 5 teams of 2 double cut greens, 5 people cut tees, 4 on fairways (nights only), 2 on approaches, 2 on greens clean-up, 2 teams of 2 rolling, 2 irrigation techs, 2 on driving range tees, and 13 on bunkers. Every this, but fairways are done in the morning. In the evening greens are single cut, approaches mowed again, fairways cut, and divots and ball marks repaired. Odd jobs are completed at night as well, such as tonight Pat and I change the cups on the 2 practice greens.

My time at Fota Island Golf Club is coming to a close. In a few days I will be headed back to Co. Kilkenny and Mt. Juliet. I have had a great experience at the Irish Open. I have seen great golf, saw Rory McIlroy play twice (too bad he did not make the cut), and mowed greens and cut practice cuts. To be around a tournament and see how it is run and set-up is valuable experience. I look forward to the day I get to run a tournament myself.
