Milford Sound: The 8th Wonder of the World
On Saturday Rob and I took a Jucy Cruise bus trip to Milford Sound. Taking us deep into the Fiordland National Park, which is the largest of the 14 national parks in NZ, we saw a unique rain forest only hours away from Queenstown. This is one of the most interesting places in NZ and the world. Hence that some have called it the 8th Wonder of the World.
Milford Sound is a fiord carved out by glaciers making for tall mountains and water some 330m (1082.68ft) deep. The real beauty of the sound is captured after a rainy day when many waterfalls appear. Some are small, but others are quite tall and permanent. Until you see Milford for yourself words and pictures do not do it justice. By taking a bus trip we got a tour guide/bus driver who stopped along the way allowing for some pictures and then a boat trip. Roland was funny as we stopped in Te Anau he joked that in the winter, "you could fire a gun down the street and not hit anyone." Also he talked about the "best pet ever" in the Tuatara, a lizard dating back millions of years that can live for hundreds of years and survive without water for 6 months or food for 5 years! I was thrilled by Milford Sound and the amazing ecosystem in a place that is unexpected.
