Job Summary: Under general direction, the Assistant Supervisor assists in directing and coordinating the day-to-day activities of Facilities Services’ Grounds Service Crew. These activities include assisting in supervising employees, managing and developing an operational budget, scheduling and planning work, conducting inspections to assure quality of work, using appropriate computer systems, and effectively communicating with customers as well as Facilities Services’ staff. Assumes main supervisory duties when Manager is present. Responsibilities: Assist managing the care and maintenance of grounds, athletic fields, campus landscape and horticultural features, snow removal and labor crew. Assist managing unionized and/or non-unionized staff. Management entails prioritizing and scheduling work assignments (daily management and long-range planning), inspecting work for quality and completion. Coordinates emergency and urgent work schedules. Understand the administrative processes of good management including: Human Resources (hiring, mentoring, and disciplinary practices; reviewing and approving time cards; filing accident reports, organizing and directing continuous and consistent training programs for reporting staff, etc.) Procurement and Inventory (ordering and stocking of materials, managing vendor contracts) Developing and using performance measurement tools to improve processes Effectively use and support Facilities’ policies and standard operating procedures. Effectively use computer technology (computerized maintenance management system, desk top applications, procurement authorization logs, etc). Participate in developing and managing the Grounds Service Crew’s operating, alterations & repair budgets or capital budget, where appropriate. Provide knowledge and compliance with applicable federal, state, and city policies pertaining to construction practices, occupational safety, public health, and the environment. Coordinate and cooperate with other Facilities Services’ staff on multi-shop work or reviewing major renovation projects. Effective and timely communication, whether verbal or written, with customers, vendors, and Facilities Services’ staff. Conduct regular inspection tours of buildings, equipment and surrounding grounds for deficiencies, potential safety, health, or code problems and necessary repairs. Prepares written reports summarizing findings, and advises other building users, or others, as appropriate, of his findings, and recommendations for dealing with problems noticed in inspection. Also, actively search and develop new markets. Respond to emergency calls at any hour of the day and work long or irregular periods when needed. Other duties as assigned.

Assists in Grounds Crew personnel management as assigned by the Manager, Grounds, including but not limited to recruiting, hiring, training, day-to-day scheduling and management, time review, assisting in disciplinary processes, regularly directing employee’s work, and evaluation. Fulfills the responsibilities of the Manager, Grounds in the absence of the Manager, Grounds. Helps ensure proper safety procedures including OSHA requirements are followed by all Grounds Crew personnel. Assists with maintenance of all batting cages and the Grounds Crew shop and storage buildings. REQUIREMENTS: The preferred candidate will have a two or four year degree in turfgrass related studies, or equivalent experience and education. Working knowledge of the maintenance of sports fields, landscape and common areas. Prior professional baseball field management experience preferred. High level of understanding of the sports requirements for field layouts and markings. Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Candidate must be a professional, self-starter who will work as a team player and also be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to manage one’s own time and the time of others. Supervisory experience, at least three years preferred. Able to work irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Possession of a valid Driver's License and excellent driving record. Must have a current Florida Commercial Pesticide and Fertilizer Applications License or have the ability to obtain it within 6 months of hire. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
