Athletic Field Technician Position Description Perform skilled and semi-skilled labor in the various aspects of Athletic Field Maintenance. Directly participate in the maintenance and preparation of playing surfaces, train subordinate staff members in techniques to maintain athletic fields. Follow operational procedures to optimally maintain the playing surface of the field. Experience, special skills, knowledge, and abilities to maintain athletic fields at the highest competitive levels are required. Receives general supervision from the Operations Manager. Exercises supervision over technicians. Examples of Important Responsibilities and Duties: Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Perform athletic field and grounds maintenance including aeration, grading, topdressing, seeding, sodding, trimming, field painting, turf care, fertilizing; apply plant protectant materials including insecticides, herbicides, soil conditioners and related materials; follow proper safety precautions; care of trees and shrubs. 2. Perform infield maintenance and repair work of baseball/softball fields including repairing bases, pitching mounds, batter’s boxes and transition areas of infield and outfield. 3. Perform tilling, rolling and fertilizing soil; construct new planting areas and maintain high traffic wear areas on athletic fields. 4. Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; organize work methods and procedures; ensure that the proper materials are available. 5. Operate a variety of specialized equipment utilized in assigned projects including tractors, power and hand tools such as chain saws, weed eaters, edgers and related equipment; assist in training others to use specialized equipment as necessary. 6. Check assigned tools and equipment needed for maintenance and repair; make minor repairs and adjustments; report major repairs to supervisor. 7. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Ability to lift and carry 50-pound bags of materials. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Three years of experience and/or college degree in turf management, horticulture, parks and recreation, or a related field. Training: Equivalent to a high school diploma with additional specialized training or educational training in grounds maintenance, horticulture or a related field. Licenses and Certificates: Possession of valid driver’s license. Ability to obtain state Pest Control Applicator and Professional Fertilizer Applicator certificates. Working and Environmental Conditions: Field environment; exposure to dust and dirt, hazards associated with operating a motor vehicle, various chemicals including fertilizers and pesticides, contagious conditions including poison oak and inclement weather conditions. Physical Conditions: Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may require maintaining physical conditions necessary for standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; climbing, kneeling and stooping; moderate to heavy lifting; the use of arms and legs. Possess basic knowledge of and be able to assist with a variety of projects which can include: aeration, hydro-seeding, drainage, field renovation and maintenance building renovation. Ability to safely use hand tools such as pole saws, loppers, hand saws, rakes, tampers, and shovels. Ability to safely operate small equipment such as walk and riding lawnmowers, weed whackers, hedge trimmers’, and backpack leaf blowers. Ability to safely operate large equipment such as motorized utility vehicles, tractors and skid steers. Willingness to perform other general tasks as assigned by the Sports Field Director and Sports Field Manager. Willingness and ability to work in various weather conditions. Motivating influence, willing to collaborate and create positive working relationships. Punctual and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Valid Driver License. Ability to work overtime and weekends. Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination. PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS Two (2) years’ experience in turf maintenance (greens keeper, groundskeeper or landscaper). Experience in ball field maintenance. One (1) year of materials applications experience. Strong communication and leadership skills. Pesticide license a plus.
