Athletic Field Technician Position Description Perform skilled and semi-skilled labor in the various aspects of Athletic Field Maintenance. Directly participate in the maintenance and preparation of playing surfaces, train subordinate staff members in techniques to maintain athletic fields. Follow operational procedures to optimally maintain the playing surface of the field. Experience, special skills, knowledge, and abilities to maintain athletic fields at the highest competitive levels are required. Receives general supervision from the Operations Manager. Exercises supervision over technicians. Examples of Important Responsibilities and Duties: Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Perform athletic field and grounds maintenance including aeration, grading, topdressing, seeding, sodding, trimming, field painting, turf care, fertilizing; apply plant protectant materials including insecticides, herbicides, soil conditioners and related materials; follow proper safety precautions; care of trees and shrubs. 2. Perform infield maintenance and repair work of baseball/softball fields including repairing bases, pitching mounds, batter’s boxes and transition areas of infield and outfield. 3. Perform tilling, rolling and fertilizing soil; construct new planting areas and maintain high traffic wear areas on athletic fields. 4. Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; organize work methods and procedures; ensure that the proper materials are available. 5. Operate a variety of specialized equipment utilized in assigned projects including tractors, power and hand tools such as chain saws, weed eaters, edgers and related equipment; assist in training others to use specialized equipment as necessary. 6. Check assigned tools and equipment needed for maintenance and repair; make minor repairs and adjustments; report major repairs to supervisor. 7. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Ability to lift and carry 50-pound bags of materials. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Three years of experience and/or college degree in turf management, horticulture, parks and recreation, or a related field. Training: Equivalent to a high school diploma with additional specialized training or educational training in grounds maintenance, horticulture or a related field. Licenses and Certificates: Possession of valid driver’s license. Ability to obtain state Pest Control Applicator and Professional Fertilizer Applicator certificates. Working and Environmental Conditions: Field environment; exposure to dust and dirt, hazards associated with operating a motor vehicle, various chemicals including fertilizers and pesticides, contagious conditions including poison oak and inclement weather conditions. Physical Conditions: Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may require maintaining physical conditions necessary for standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; climbing, kneeling and stooping; moderate to heavy lifting; the use of arms and legs. The Golf Senior Technician maintains and enhances Cleveland Metroparks golf courses by performing skilled work on all aspects of golf maintenance. This position will report to their assigned Cleveland Metroparks golf course regularly, but will be required to report to other Cleveland Metroparks golf courses based on project schedule. Essential Functions: Performs skilled work on golf course irrigation and drainage. Performs skilled work in golf grounds maintenance including; cutting cups, raking bunkers, and mowing greens, tees, and fairways while exercising a degree of independent judgement. Proficient in the maintenance and repair of turf equipment including, but not limited to golf carts, triplex mowers, fairway mowers, utility carts, rough mowers. Possesses the ability to grind and set up reels for fairway, greens, and tee mowers. Demonstrates technical knowledge and proficiency in the handling and application of pesticides and fertilizers. Understands how to calibrate tank sprayers and material spreaders for application of products on the golf course. Understands, operates and maintains trencher, skid steer, mini-excavator and other related construction equipment. Understands, operates and maintains the following equipment: Green, tee, and fairways mowers, greens roller, tractors, topdressers, spreaders, and other related turf equipment. Trains other team members in equipment operation, maintenance, and safety procedures. Performs assigned duties with efficiency and attention to detail. Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding areas for oneself, co-workers, and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable, and promptly notifying supervisory personnel. Provides work direction, changes work assignments, and corrects work activity of other employees, as assigned. Performs related duties as apparent or assigned.
