This position will focus on data collection using the latest industry tools for surface hardness, soil moisture, vegetation coverage, infiltration, and topography to measure current athletic field conditions and make recommendations for resource allocation. Salary is commensurate with experience Examples of Important Duties Athletic Field Internship: The duties will include but not be limited to: Understanding and practical knowledge of athletic field-testing equipment such as a Clegg Hammer for compaction, three ring infiltrometer for infiltration testing, soil probe and profiler for soil inspection and documentation, NVDI cameras (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) use and documentation, GIS (Geographic Informational Systems) data entry for documenting data collection locations. Understanding and identification of desirable turf species (bermudagrass, tall fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass) for subjective percentages in a competing environment with annual grasses (goosegrass, crabgrass, poa annua) and broadleaf weeds (chickweed, clover, dandelion, broadleaf plantain, Japanese stilt grass, kyllinga, nutsedge, black media, Canada thistle, carpetweed, henbit, oxalis, prostrate knotweed, purslane, smartweed, wild garlic, wild onion, etc.) in a defined area. Understand drainage patterns of current topography and have functional knowledge of a laser grading handheld unit for documentation of grade deviations on athletic fields. Ability to document data collection using multiple software platforms using technical equipment as well as iPhone, iPad, and laptops. Provide equipment calibration and maintenance support. Must possess a valid Driver’s License and qualify to drive Commission vehicles to locations within Montgomery County. May also perform skilled athletic field maintenance and renovation work involving moderate responsibility, complexity, and variety. Performs turfgrass related tasks such as baseball/softball infield maintenance, mowing, edging, aeration, seeding, nutrient management, and sod removal/installation. Executes turfgrass work at the experienced level, involving operation of most equipment and specialized assignments requiring training and experience. Operates a variety of equipment such as trucks, tractors with attachments (aerification equipment, seeders, rollers, sprayers, sprigger), sod installation equipment, zero-turn mowers, and walk behind aerification equipment. Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions effectively and efficiently. Communicate with supervisor and other staff members any concerns and/or needs of the project or athletic field and equipment. This position regularly performs work as a group but may occasionally work alone on projects. May be required to drive Commission vehicles upon completion of defensive driving training.
