Orchard Park is currently in the process of a Golf Course Masterplan, that looks to recapture the Travis design style.  Orchard Park recently engaged Jim Nagle and Nagle Design works for an all-comprehensive Golf Course Masterplan, as to bring back the Travis charisma to the course. Position Overview Orchard Park Country Club is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join our turf management team. The Assistant Superintendent will work closely with the Director of Grounds in overseeing all aspects of golf course maintenance, daily operations, crew leadership, and long-range course improvement projects.

Provide golf course management support to the Superintendent. Assist in the development and full execution of an all-inclusive golf course maintenance plan for two championship 18-hole golf courses, including turf maintenance and landscaping programs. Assess criteria necessary for making critical-path decisions, which ultimately affect the playability of each course.  Supervise regular and temporary hourly staff.   Maintenance Operations Assist in the development and full execution of an all-inclusive golf course maintenance plan for two 18-hole golf courses. Manage daily golf course turf maintenance and related projects, which includes but is not limited to mowing, turf maintenance, chemical applications, irrigation, tree and shrub maintenance; golf course aesthetics. Develop new techniques and innovative methods for improved golf course maintenance operations for improved playability and cost effectiveness. Prioritize daily any critical-path decisions affecting the "play-ability" of the course, i.e. assess the critical nature of the conditions and react accordingly. Develop and maintain positive, productive working relationships with athletics, agronomy and physical facilities staffs, as well as with outside vendors. Oversee golf course construction projects.   Spraying Applications Daily inspect golf course to assess need for pesticide herbicide, fungicide, group control. Recommend spraying application schedule, chemical rates, quantity and location of all appropriate and necessary chemical applications to the Superintendent. Keep accurate and complete records of all pesticide applications, fertilizer calibration, rate, and applications.   Supervisory Responsibilities Oversee the scheduling and work assignments of regular, temporary non-student and student maintenance employees to ensure good, playable conditions, and cost control. Make decisions or recommendations for hiring, promotion, pay adjustments, performance feedback, and terminations. Train and supervise employees in equipment operation and golf course maintenance. Review and maintain accurate time cards. Provide cross training to the Assistant Superintendent and oversight for the landscape specialist position. Maintenance Shop Operations Collaboratively with the Assistant Superintendent, oversee maintenance and shop operations by: developing maintenance equipment budget, reviewing and approving repair and upkeep of equipment within approved budget, approving purchase of parts and materials for maintenance shop, developing multi-year plan for maintenance equipment purchase, trade-in and salvage. Oversee proper procedures and implementation of equipment maintenance, e.g., grinding, lapping, adjusting and diagnosis:-Advise on equipment repairs and ordering necessary parts to fix with budget-awareness. Annual Budget Prepare annual budget recommendations for the maintenance and capital improvements of the golf courses and related properties. Recommend cost control measures to keep operating and capital expenses in line with approved budget. Assist Superintendent with short and long-range planning. Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent. Collaborate with outside constituencies such as NCAA and USGA to meet specifications of tournaments. Participation in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, correspondence courses, field days, and trade shows. Subject to 24-hour callbacks.

The position will report directly to the Course Superintendent and assists with the day to day oversight of the maintenance and agronomic practices of the property, golf course and adjacent grounds. Working with a small crew, this position is perfect for anyone trying to broaden their knowledge of the turf grass industry.    1-3 yrs turf grass management experience, supervisory experience, self driven with a passion for the turf grass industry, attention to detail, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong analytical and problem solving skills. Works with Superintendent on short term and long term agronomic strategies to maintain the course daily, weekly, monthly fertilization, irrigation ,etc. Must have Rainbird Irrigation. Need to obtain AZ Pesticide license within 90 days. Full time yr round position.
