Wampanoag Country Club an 18-hole private club in West Hartford CT, is seeking a highly motivated assistant superintendent.  Wampanoag has a deep tradition of being a premier private club in the West Hartford area.  We have over 350 members, and the club celebrated its centennial celebration last season.  The club is currently constructing a new clubhouse with anticipated opening in the fall of 2025.  The golf course is a Donald Ross gem, which underwent a 4.5 million dollar restoration in 2023 by architect Tyler Rae.  The restoration added over 1.3 acres of putting surface, 11 acres of new fairway extensions, and realigned all putting surfaces, and bunkers to their original Ross design. Plans for a new maintenance facility are in the early stages of planning.  The putting surfaces are a combination of poa/bentgrass with three brand new USGA 007 bentgrass greens.   The irrigation system is a two-wire Toro system with all HDPE piping completed in 2018.  The maintenance staff consists of ten seasonal employees and six full-time employees.  Improving drainage on the golf course is priority number one.    Wampanoag is seeking a self-motivated, positive team player to join our maintenance team.  The candidate will assist the superintendent in every facet of the management team including recruiting, hiring, training, record keeping, spray and fertilizer applications, and irrigation repairs.  The assistant will be encouraged to attend yearly seminars, conferences, and continuing education opportunities.  The goal is to help the assistant to take the next step in their careers, while managing a high-performance team on a daily basis. James River is a private Country Club opened in 1932.  The club worked with golf course architect John LaFoy to complete a bunker renovation in the spring of 2019.  Golf course is comprised of A4 bentgrass greens, celebration bermuda tees, fairways and roughs, and fine fescue in the tree lines.  James River is maintained to the highest standards daily and has thus become popular for championship events including US Amateur qualifiers, Mid-Atlantic Golf Association Championships and VSGA championship events.  The golf and grounds maintenance department is responsible for all grounds on the property in addition to the golf course.  We are also the home of the country’s oldest golf museum.  Golf and grounds maintenance budget is around $1.1M.   Candidate will be responsible for fertilizer and pesticide applications as well as supervision of the crew and ensuring that quality standards are achieved on a daily basis.  Will work closely with the Superintendent to make agronomic decisions to provide both health and playablity of the course.

Contentment is a new private, 18-hole club currently under construction on 900 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The front nine of the course is currently in the grassing and grow-in phases, while construction is underway on the back nine. USGA greens, tees, and fairways will be seeded in bentgrass, while roughs and native areas will feature fescue blends. Once complete, the property will feature fishing and hiking opportunities and provide cabins and clubhouse rooms for overnight stays.  We are currently recruiting and assembling our Grounds Maintenance team at Contentment, and are seeking an assistant superintendent. The assistant superintendent will work closely with the golf course superintendent, general manager, and all club leadership as we prepare to open the golf course this fall.  Assistant superintendents will focus on the planning, monitoring and execution of daily production of the Grounds Maintenance team. Responsibilities will be broad and fluid as this project is completed and our team assembled. Daily collaboration with our club's staff, management, and ownership; the golf course architect; the construction contractor and their sub-contractors, and the golf course superintendent will be essential.  Assistant superintendents will contribute to staff management, training, supervision and retention; and will play a hands-on role in accomplishing long-, and short-term goals in the construction, planting, grow-in and maintenance of the golf course. In addition, the assistant superintendents will be responsible for irrigation management, application, installation and repair; chemical and fertilizer application, record-keeping and inventory; and drainage installation, repair, and maintenance. Along with learning and collaborating with highly experienced greenkeepers, each course has its own unique style.  The DuPont course, which was renovated by Lester George in the mid 2000’s, is a modern layout where the fairways and tees are L-93 bentgrass and the USGA constructed greens are a mix of the A1/A4 bentgrass varieties.  Nemours, which is the other 18 hole championship course is a golden age, parkland style track with Ryegrass as the primary turfgrass surface on tees and fairways and the modified soil push up greens are a mix of poa annua and old school bents.  The 9 hole Montchanin course is an executive style layout with modified soil push up greens mixed with poa annua and older varieties of bent.  Dominant bentgrass is the surface being managed on the fairways, and the tees, which are unirrigated, are Riviera Bermudagrass.  And last but not least is the state of the art practice facility with 1.5 acres of 007 bentgrass driving range tees and a 4 acre short game practice area.    The perk of being the Golf Course Assistant Superintendent at DuPont Country Club is the diversity of styles amongst all the courses on property.  In other words, you will gain an understanding of how to manage the many different turfgrass varieties and growing mediums on the Dupont Country Club property, as compared to other clubs & golfing facilities throughout the region.
