By Chevy Chase Club, - Chevy Chase, Maryland
Due to one of our Assistant Superintendents moving on to take over his own club as Superintendent, a vacancy has opened on our team. Chevy Chase Club was established in the fall of 1892 by members of Washington D.C.’s Metropolitan Club, who sought a country retreat where they could enjoy horses, sports, and social gatherings, away from the bustle of the growing city. In 1894, the Club secured its first permanent location on land that included the historic Bradley Farmhouse. Golf was introduced the following year with a six-hole layout, coinciding with the founding of the USGA. By 1897, the Club had purchased the 9.36-acre tract surrounding the Bradley House. Today, Chevy Chase Club is a premier, full-service private club offering an 18-hole golf course, extensive practice facilities, 17 outdoor and 4 indoor tennis courts, 7 paddle tennis courts, a fitness center, 3 swimming pools, duckpin bowling lanes, an outdoor ice rink, an 18-room guest house, a nature trail, and greenhouses. Dining options include three clubhouse restaurants, banquet spaces, two seasonal canteens, and the casual Winter Center. The golf course has a rich architectural legacy. It was originally laid out by the Club’s early Scottish golf professionals Willie Tucker, George Sargent, and Robert White. In 1911, Donald Ross was commissioned to redesign the existing golf course, with input from Walter Travis. A subsequent renovation was carried out by the firm of Colt & Alison between 1922 and 1924. Most recently, in 2024, the course underwent a comprehensive renovation led by golf course architect Andrew Green, which included new tees, bunkers, and greens, expanded fairways, thoughtful tree removal, and the installation of a new Rain Bird IC irrigation system. The course remains primarily a walking golf course, with golf carts permitted only for golfers aged 65 and older. Course Maintenance & Agronomy Assist the Golf Course Superintendent in daily management of turfgrass and grounds maintenance operations. Supervise and participate in the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, rough, and practice areas. Monitor turf conditions and assist in implementing agronomic programs including mowing, irrigation, fertilization, topdressing, aeration, and pest management. Maintain high standards for course playability and aesthetics in accordance with club expectations. Staff Supervision & Training Direct, train, and motivate the maintenance staff to ensure efficiency, quality, and safety. Assign daily tasks, monitor performance, and provide hands-on leadership in the field. Help with scheduling, timekeeping, and performance evaluations. Irrigation & Equipment Operate and troubleshoot irrigation systems, make repairs as needed, and ensure proper water management practices. Oversee the calibration and safe application of fertilizers and pesticides. Coordinate with the Equipment Manager to ensure proper maintenance of mowers and other turf equipment. Course Setup & Tournament Preparation Assist in daily course setup including hole locations, tee markers, and hazard maintenance. Help prepare the course for member events and tournaments, ensuring conditions meet championship standards. Administrative & Environmental Responsibilities Maintain records of chemical and fertilizer applications, weather conditions, and maintenance activities. Assist with budget tracking, inventory management, and ordering of agronomic supplies. Promote environmental stewardship and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Leadership & Development Continue professional education through seminars, GCSAA programs, and networking with peers. Contribute to developing and mentoring interns and entry-level staff for future advancement.
