We have multiple positions available across our resort courses (Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, The Links at Spanish Bay). Some previous maintenance experience is preferred, but not necessary. Applicants must possess a willingness to work, with an interest and belief in learning the industry from a hands-in-the-dirt perspective. The Intern positions will be involved in all aspects of golf course maintenance. This is not a management position. However, proven ability and a strong work ethic will be rewarded with increasing levels of involvement. This includes responsibilities such as leading crews, irrigation install and troubleshooting, chemical application/calibration, and review of course budgeting and long term planning. These positions have served as an excellent steppingstone for those seeking to be an assistant superintendent in the near future. 9 of the 12 Managers currently employed in the golf maintenance division at Pebble Beach Company started as interns or AIT’s at one of our courses. What Can You as a Student/Recent Graduate Expect? Full exposure to all aspects of golf course maintenance Opportunities to work with one the leading independent turfgrass research scientists in the world, Mark Mahady. Dr. Mahady performs numerous trials for the largest chemical companies in the industry right here at the Links at Spanish Bay. Currently we are in the midst of a comprehensive nematode trial as well as a native grass trial. Tournament experience will be plentiful. All of the Pebble Beach Company courses host numerous tournaments throughout the year, most notably the AT&T Pro-Am in February, The Pure Insurance Championship in September, and the Pebble Beach Invitational in November- all PGA tour events. Interns will have a “home” course, but opportunities will exist to spend time at all three resort courses to gain exposure to different agronomic programs, resources and management styles. We are located on the I-94 corridor in the Scenic and historic Badlands of North Dakota along the Little Missouri River, just 3 miles south of Historic Medora, ND. The golf course measures 7,166 yards from the Championship tees and has four other sets to choose from. Summary/Objective Under the supervision of the Chief Operating Officer, the Superintendent is responsible for directing, coordinating and overseeing the day-to-day Bully Pulpit Golf Course maintenance operations and personnel, focusing on ensuring the best possible playing conditions, coordinating and communicating issues and course conditions to clubhouse staff, personnel and fiscal management while promoting and exhibiting World Class Guest Service to all the Bully Pulpit guests. Requirements Duties/Responsibilities Provides agronomic direction to maintain the golf course at the highest quality possible at all times. Plans, organizes and directs the maintenance and construction of putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers. Supervise all planting, fertilizing and care of turf, plants, shrubs, and trees on the golf course and grounds. Assist with the development and implementation of fertilizer, aeration and pest management program for proper turf grass and plant care. Ability to identify turf grass and landscape weeds and recommend or perform treatment. Supervise course construction, renovation and/or reconstruction whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors. Conducts course inspections, including irrigation ponds and infrastructure to ensure the best possible and safe playing conditions. Coordinates driving range maintenance with the Head Golf Professional. Prepares and maintains the annual golf course maintenance budget and capital plans. Procures supplies and materials within budgetary limitations. Keeps record of annual maintenance activities and costs. Implements sound purchasing procedures utilizing preferred vendors, when possible. Supervise equipment maintenance and repair operations. Establish and implement a cleaning and preventive maintenance program for appropriate equipment, tools, vehicles, etc. Coordinate irrigation programs on a daily basis with irrigation technicians or other staff. Must have a working knowledge of irrigation pump stations, computer control systems, satellites and automatic heads and design. Collaboration with Assistant Superintendent(s) on course priorities. Works closely with, advises, and coordinates daily and weekly with the Head Golf Pro or Clubhouse staff on any issues related to golf course maintenance and to discuss activities, forecasts, goals, plans and customer input. Works closely with COO and Head Golf Pro to operate the Golf Course in a fiscally responsible and professional manner. Coordinate record keeping for the course including chemical applications, fertilizer applications, MSDS sheets, soil and tissue sampling. Assures that effective orientation and training are given to each new full-time and seasonal employee. Establish employee training programs with appropriate documentation including, mowing schedules and proper mowing practices, course set up for play, proper chemical and fertilizer applications, computer irrigation systems, pump station protocol. Ensures all TRMF policies and procedures are followed. Ensures proper mixing, calibration and application of all chemical/fertilizers use on the course. Ensures an open and welcoming atmosphere that promotes skill enhancement and overall safety. Ensures staff is working within OSHA, club safety, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions. Schedules and plans shift schedules, calendars, communicates departmental and organizational goals, and identifies opportunities for improvement. Maintains a skilled, trained and motivated staff through continuous communication, feedback and effective training. Ensure that staff obtain proper training and/or licenses needed to perform job tasks safely and within regulations. Be available after hours in event of an emergency. Maintain knowledge of current and projected industry developments through continuous attention to industry periodicals and participation in relevant trade associations and organizations. Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities Manages the departments personnel that may include, but is not limited to; Assistant Superintendent, Equipment Technician, Irrigation Technician, Grounds Crew. Hires and trains golf course grounds staff. Schedules, organizes, and assigns projects to members of the golf course grounds team. Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive. Handle discipline and termination of employees as needed in accordance with TRMF policy. Work Environment Work hours may include days and evenings on weekdays and weekends. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. May be exposed to inclement weather, potentially dangerous chemicals, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, misdirected golf balls, sharp and rapid equipment movement on a daily basis. Injury or sickness may result if safety policies and practices are not properly followed. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position that regularly requires long hours and weekend work.
