Under general supervision, assists Golf Course Management in training and directing the seasonal staff. Performs a variety of golf course maintenance duties, including all routine golf course maintenance operations, while working on-site at the beautiful Thorncreek Golf Course. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Leads, delegates, and participates in golf course maintenance, special projects and in-house construction. Participates in the daily set-up of golf course, including mowing, bunker maintenance, cutting cups, moving tee markers, trash removal, weeding planters, and placement of water coolers; inspects and cleans restroom facilities, clubhouse grounds, parking lot and sidewalks as needed. Instructs staff on proper equipment use and work methods. Enforces safe working conditions with all job assignments. Uses a wide variety of equipment used in maintaining a golf course, including, but not limited to, string trimmer, edging equipment, sod cutter, trencher, front-end loader, backhoe, large and small scale mowing equipment, riding boom sprayer, backpack sprayer, tractors, top dressers, aerators, and greens roller. Applies soil amendments, prunes trees, lays sod and applies seed; sweeps or rakes debris; assists in cultural practices (aerating, spiking, topdressing etc.). Removes trash and debris from ponds as needed, and seasonally installs and removes water aeration fountains in ponds. Operates all equipment necessary for golf course maintenance. Communicates with golf course management on a daily basis. Assists and provides support with irrigation system repair as needed. Assists and provides support with equipment maintenance and repair as needed. Assists in application of fertilizers and pesticides to golf course turf and planters as needed. Required to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed. Required to perform snow removal duties as assigned. May open the maintenance shop and run operations in the absence of the golf course management. Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience: High School diploma, GED or equivalent; and at least three seasons in golf course maintenance required. Previous experience in a lead capacity preferred. Some level of formal education in Turfgrass Management preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Licensing/Certification Requirements: Must possess or have the ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator license within 12 months of hire. Winchester Country Club remains one of the premier courses and exclusive clubs in the state, ranking 12th in Golf Digest’s Best In State. Featuring views of both the Mystic Lakes and the Boston skyline, this Ross layout remains intact, with help from Ron Forse Golf Design over the past few decades and most recently the hiring of famed architect Andrew Green for an updated Master Plan and course renovation beginning in August of 2026 consisting of Greens modifications, full bunker renovation with the addition of Better Billy Bunker liners and Signature 900 sand, Tee reconstruction and fairway expansions are some of the many improvements that will be made to the course, providing both challenge and enjoyment for its members and their guests once complete. The club has also been awarded the honor to host the Massachusetts Amateur in July of 2026. The Turf Internship position is a collaborative one with the Superintendent and Assistants. The position will strengthen the candidate’s agronomic knowledge and course conditioning expertise. The position will prepare the candidate for an Assistant-In-Training position here at Winchester or wherever the candidate would like to progress their career. The objective of the position is to educate the individual on the basics and the continued expertise of turf management as well as how the course is set up for play each day. The individual is asked to absorb information pertaining to plant health, course conditioning, course set-up and learn to understand operational logistics. The position is designed to build the ground work and establish a foundation of agronomics (plant & soil science), infrastructure (drainage, irrigation piping & electrical components, pumphouse, buildings, transportation paths), be a part of course projects big & small, boost crew morale, understand weather & disease pressure forecasting and observations, cultural practices, moisture management, quality of cuts, and course set-up (tee marker locations, pin locations, green speeds and firmness, shot selection, how the course is played through the golfers viewpoint each day, fescue/rough/bunker playability) to name a few. The candidate will be immersed in educational and informative conversations relating to agronomics and course preparations with the Superintendent and Assistants. The candidates will experience all aspects of what it takes to be a great turf manager, and to provide the membership with the best possible golfing experience through unmatched golf course conditioning on a daily basis. The candidate will communicate with the Turf Team (Super, Assts & AITs) on the details of general maintenance performed on course, and work with the Greenskeepers on upholding the expectations of the Grounds Department. The candidate on occasion will work side-by-side with the crew on their staff assignments to practice their leadership skills, be responsible for irrigation/water needs and plant protectant applications for all surfaces and become an expert with plant health and conditioning.
